DESCRIPTION: This lab is designed to help the practitioner view and treat the animal as a whole. When a dog has a problem somewhere, that problem can lead to other issues. Those issue could be minor or significantly impactful to the animal’s full recovery and functioning. This session will review typical compensation patterns for common ailments. Participants will be encouraged to clinically reason through a biomechanical lens in order to predict compensation patterns and brainstorm to work out strategies to prevent the compensations before they occur or to treat them once identified. Participants will be encouraged to share their thoughts, findings, and clinical wisdom with their classmates.
 
Learning Objectives:
Explain compensation as a whole-body strategy used to keep the center of mass over the base of support when one region loses mobility, strength, or neurologic control, using human postural patterns and canine weight distribution as examples.
Predict how common orthopedic and neurologic conditions redistribute load, stance timing, and posture in dogs, including contralateral and diagonal shifts, cranial weight shift, and differences between joint pain and pelvic-limb weakness.
Identify postural, mechanical, fascial, and behavioral changes that accompany common orthopedic and neurologic conditions, and relate them to human muscle-imbalance and fascial-chain models.
Distinguish pain-related movement avoidance from weakness-related compensation in dogs with orthopedic disease, disc-related pain, and other neurologic deficits.
Select interventions for compensations identified, or anticipated, in common orthopedic and neurologic conditions.
